Thanks to Mom’s Words

It takes different kinds of personalities and points of view to make the world an interesting place, but there are some things I just cannot understand. My mother’s words ring in my ears:

“If you set your mind to something, you can do it.”

Another favorite that she brainwashed me with, was:

“There is no such thing as ‘I can’t’ or ‘I’ll try’ and for good measure she would add, “If you are going to do something, do it properly.”

These statements are not restricted to successes only, I have been known to make mistakes, and to “do them properly,” but when is comes to challenges, I tackle them head on. No I am not perfect, but I am determined (my husband would say stubborn) and when I set my mind to something, well I just have to do it.

When I see someone with the potential to do so much, achieve so much and be so happy in doing it and yet they just cannot reach out and grasp their dream, it drives me crazy! I want to gently explain to them that all they need to do is set their mind to it and do it. Change the negative, destructive attitudes and thoughts and get on with it already! I just do not understand it. Why is it so apparent to me and so lost on them? Why do so many good, great and fantastic people refuse to believe in themselves?

Perhaps it is because their mother said:

“We’ll, just wait and see what happens?” or “Well if it is meant to be, it will happen?”

If you want something and it is worth the effort, will enrich and improve the lives of others, and by default, your own, then go for it. Do you think that others out there are any greater than you? No, they just think greater, dream bigger and reach further.
