Book Review

Never Forget by Jody Hedlund

Will she betray his trust to stay on the island she loves?

MY REVIEW

Never Forget, is the last book in the Beacons of Hope Series. A bittersweet moment when you enjoy the book SO MUCH, but know that you have to say goodbye to the series. (On the plus side, there is much more to come from Jody Hedlund, so I will survive.)

I have to say that this book is one of the few that I read lately which gave me a book hangover. Not every book I read does that, but this one….wow! Just, wow!

Author, Jody’s insight into characters who struggle with real life issues, messy life, lies they tell themselves ( and believe too) and the best part, how they overcome and find grace in a world that does not lend itself to grace.

Never Forget is set in Rhode Island June in 1880. In this book we find out what happens to wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop III  when he unexpectedly meets Abbie Watson and finds himself, through some unpredictable circumstances, married to her, or so he thinks. There are parts in this story where I felt as if my heart was being torn apart as I watch these unlikely pair find their way. I really don’t want to spoil the story for you, but in this story you will find a picture of grace and love, of unconditional love, of love tested and tried. Abbie’s determination to survive, and her sometimes misguided decisions all proceed from a place of need and she struggles to find acceptance. Her journey is beautiful and heart wrenching all at the same time. Nathaniel’s journey to be a better man is no less remarkable and no less rocky. The moody ocean and changing beach are just as much a character in this story, as the humans are.

“Are you happy?” she called after him.

Her question stopped him. Was he happy? No.

Throw in Abbie’s love for her grandfather who suffers from dementia and you have a page turner, and be sure to have the Kleenex ready, and don’t worry, there are plenty of laughs along the way. But be prepared to fall in love with these two characters, Annie and Nathaniel are perhaps the most memorable in the series for me personally, and that is saying something! Each book just blew me away, but this one, was somehow dearest to my heart.
