Not by Sight is Kate Breslin’s much anticipated second book, set in Britain in 1917 during WWI. Sparks begin to fly when Grace Mabry hands a white feather of cowardice to the handsome Jack Benningham, the Earl of Stonebrook, who is known for his pacifist views. Grace is motivated by her patriotism and fierce love for her twin who is fighting in the trenches in France. From the moment Grace hands over that feather, things are set in motion beyond their control. Secrets, intrigue, heartache and betrayal challenge Jack and Grace’s outlook on the world, as they search to walk by Faith and not by sight and overcome their prejudices of one another.
A word of warning:
Clear your schedule before you start reading and plan on losing a few hours of sleep perhaps. I found myself reading late into the night, unable to put down this masterpiece. Kate not only tells this wonderful story with expertize and grace, but her descriptions of the countryside of Kent through Grace’s eyes, make you want to hop on a plane and see them for yourself.
I loved Grace’s journey as a character through this book. The challenges she faces, including mishaps with mud and pigs, do not dissuade her from contributing to a cause she is passionate about. And while doing so, she does not tramp all over her colleagues to get ahead, but rather makes friends of them all, including Claire Danner who at first takes and instant disliking to Grace, calling her “Duchess.”
One of the strong themes in this book is overcoming prejudice by seeing people with the heart and not by outward appearances or seemingly compelling evidence that might sway you from the truth about who they really are.
What a wild ride, I was rooting for Grace the whole way through. This story was like Beauty and the Beast, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eye and a little more, all rolled into one delightful piece of literature. This book will not disappoint and I look forward to more from this Christy and Rita Award finalist.
I received a copy of Not By Sight from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I received no compensation for this review and only received a copy of the book for review purposes.
