Pepper Basham talks about Twist of Faith

Pepper Basham is an award-winning author who writes romance peppered with grace and humor. She currently resides in the lovely mountains of Asheville, NC where she is the mom of five great kids, speech-pathologist to about fifty more, lover of chocolate, jazz, and Jesus. Her debut historical novel, The Thorn Bearer, released in May, 2015 and has garnered awards such as Reader’s Favorites Award, finalist in the Grace Awards, and shortlisted for the Inspy Awards. Her second historical novel, The Thorn Keeper, released in Feb, 2016 and her first contemporary romance, A Twist of Faith, released in April, 2016 with a 4 star review from Romantic Times. Q: When you are writing, what treat do you like to keep you going?
Pepper: I’m not a coffee drinker, but I am a hot tea drinker

Q: Tell me about why/how you chose the genre you write in and what about it appeals to you?
Pepper: Well, obviously I have a hard time choosing genres since I have books published in both historical and contemporary settings. I love something different in each. I absolutely adore the World War 1 time period – the elegance, manners, and rapid change. In contemporaries, I love being able to add humor and lingo of the times. Story creation is a blast, regardless of genre for me, I guess.

Q: If you were to pick one character out of your books that could materialize and become a real live person, a friend, who would it be and why?
Pepper: I would love Eisley Barrett, to come to life and be my friend. She is the heroine of a yet-to-be-published book of mine called Just the Way You Are.

Q: What do you do to get into “the zone” when you are writing? Do you listen to music, or go for a walk? Describe the process.
Pepper: Well, most of the time ‘the zone’ for me happens in small spurts of time. I rarely get large blocks of time to write. So ‘the zone’ has to happen regardless of mood or music. Story creating happens through my day, kind of like daydreaming, so when I do have those small increments of time, I’m usually ready to write. On the rare occasion I have more time, I usually do enjoy listening to music and some times I enjoy taking a drive or walk through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Q: What was the hardest scene to write in Twist of Faith?
Pepper: I suppose writing the scene involving Dee’s mother was the most difficult–the argument between Dee and Reese as well as the interaction between Dee and her mom.

Q: Please give me one fun fact about yourself that readers may not know.
Pepper: My first kiddo was born during my first year of graduate school for speech-language pathology. My final kid was born during exam week of a class I was teaching at the university level…I came back to give their final exam when she was three days old.

Q: Is there anything you would like to include?
Pepper: I love hearing from readers. It’s such a delight to know that all the work and effort a writer puts into creating a story is enjoyed and appreciated–but even more than that, it is also used by God to touch lives. That’s an amazing blessing God allows me to be a part of. His work. I’m truly humbled by it.
