Welcome, Patti!

Q: Where is your book Three Little Things set? And why did you pick your genre to write in?

Patti: Three Little Things is set in Iowa, Arkansas, Philadelphia, and France during WW I. I picked historical fiction for two reasons: it’s the genre I love to read, and I had a great idea for a WW I book. I’ve tried writing contemporary fiction, but I’m not cool enough. All my words sound homespun.

Q: What was the hardest scene to write in the book?

Patti: By far, the hardest scene to write was a battle scene. But then I remembered I only needed to see the war through my hero’s eyes, not the sweeping view. Narrowing my focus and tucking away my insecurities helped one-hundred percent. Still, I’ve probably tweaked that scene more than any other.

Q: Tell us about your writing journey for this book, please.

Patti: I wrote the first draft of my manuscript 20 years ago after my mother and her sisters found a tin of love letters their parents had exchanged. At the same time, I needed a project for a college creative writing class. Bingo! My maternal grandparents inspired my manuscript. After I graduated from college, I took a busy job at a nonprofit, shelved the manuscript, and unearthed it a couple of years ago to deepen my research and rewrite.

Q: Where is your happy place when you write? Indoors, outdoors, office, coffee shop?

Patti: I love my boring little office/spare bedroom. It brims with my favorite books and family photos. If I wrote at a coffee shop, it would have taken me 40 years to write a book. I’m easily distracted.

Q: What are you working on now?

Patti: Because It’s True, my second manuscript is written and with five great beta readers. It’s about a woman who learns she’s adopted and a man who returns home from WW I. His sweetheart married someone else, his twin. The hero and heroine hit the road to find her sisters and a fresh start for him. Along the way, they discover something else—happily ever after.

Thank you so much for being here today and sharing your book! Isn’t the cover gorgeous?

Readers, how about you? Do you like stories based on real-life letters?

ABOUT THE BOOK

One forbidden love. Two broken hearts. Three little things.

Hattie Waltz should forget the troubled neighbor leaving for boot camp in 1917. He forgot about her ages ago. It had always been the Waltzs verses the Kregers, his family pitted against hers. When she hands him a farewell gift, a chemistry lesson unfolds. The good kind.

Arno Kreger can’t leave Iowa or his old man fast enough. He’s eager to prove his worth on the battlefield and stop blaming himself for his brother’s death. Before entering the train, he bumps into Hattie. He’s loved her forever, always from the sidelines, because nobody crosses Hattie’s pa.

One innocent letter soon morphs into many. Arno and Hattie share three little secrets in each letter and grow closer together. But he’s on his way to war across the ocean, and she’s still in her father’s house. Their newfound love will need to survive dangers on both fronts.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Patti Stockdale loves hope, history, and a good happily ever after. She can’t remember numbers, so she married a statistician. Thanks to him, she’s lived all sorts of places and worked all sorts of jobs. While employed by an NFL team, she once answered the phone with the team’s wrong name. She doesn’t work there anymore. For 11 years, she directed the programming at a nonprofit senior center and hosted an annual talent show, rocking a Dolly Parton wig, Annie Oakley boots, and a sweet—although snug—Batman costume. She no longer works there either. These days, Patti writes books and occasionally educational assessments and magazine articles. Please visit her at www.pattistockdale.com.
