Nicole Deese Talks about A Season To Love
Q & A with Nicole Deese by Melony Teague
Nicole Deese is a full time lover of humorous, heartfelt, and hope-filled fiction. When she’s not writing a sweet romance, she can usually be found reading one near a window while drinking La Croix. She lives in small-town, Idaho with her handsome hubby and two sons.
2014 American Christian Fiction Writers’ Genesis Award Finalist and Winner of the 2014 Swoony Award for Best Christmas Romance
Q: When you are writing, what treat do you like to snack on to keep you going?
Nicole: Well, I’m pretty obsessed with La Croix Sparkling Water. I go through a few cases a week, especially when I’m on deadline. (Sometimes I add a Zip Fizz to them if I need an extra boost of energy—and by sometimes I mean daily.) And my latest must-have snack right now is Emerald Valley cocoa almonds. So yummy!
Q: Tell me about why / how you chose the genre you write in and what about it appeals to you?
Nicole: Honestly, I’m pretty sure the “romance genre” chose me. I’ve been a sucker for love stories since girlhood. There’s just something incredibly fulfilling about writing the journey of two people falling in love against the odds (both personal and external.)
Q: A Season to Love is book #2 in the Love in Lenox series, what was the biggest challenge in writing Willa’s story?
Nicole: The ending, although to be fair, endings are almost always the biggest beast I tackle during my writing process. I’m pretty sure I wrote about a dozen endings for Willa’s book before it was reader-ready.
Q: If you were to pick one character out of your books that could materialize and become a real live person, a friend, who would it be and why?
Nicole: Hmm…this is a hard one. I would love to pal around with Weston James (from A Cliché Christmas and A Season To Love) but I’m pretty sure my hubby would have something to say about that…so I’ll choose Alex Reyes from A Season To Love. I could use a spunky teenage girl in my life, especially since I’m a mom of two boys. She’d make a super fun romantic-comedy movie date and a great pedicure partner.
Q:What do you do to get into “the zone” when you are writing?
Nicole: I listen to loud, lyric-filled music when I write. Currently I have around 400 songs saved to my Spotify writing playlists and I try to match the mood of the scene to the mood of the music. Well-written lyrics are a huge source of inspiration for me. I also write with my trusty snowflake blanket on my lap and a full water bottle (or a La Croix) on my desk at the ready. Haha!
Q: One fun fact about yourself that readers may not know is…
Nicole: I can sing the fifty states song in less than twenty-two seconds. For real. It’s my only hidden talent. Someday I hope it earns me a prize!
