Midnight on the Mississippi by Mary Ellis is a “who done it” set in New Orleans. Hunter Galen is charged with the murder of his friend and business partner and nothing is as cut and dried as it seems. There was much more to James’ schemes than a little skimming off the accounts of his clients.

Miss Price (Nicolette) is determined to find the real killer. Niki Price is a certified private investigator and the ink has just dried on her newly issued certification and her cousin Nate who was called in to cover the case does not want her help, nor does he think she is capable. Due to unexpected circumstances, he is unable to continue his investigative duties and Nikki takes over.
Hunter’s fiancee does not welcome Nikki’s interference in the least and does not hide her displeasure at Nikki’s snooping around and interfering with Hunter’s plans to tie the knot.

As Hunter and Nikki spend time together digging for the truth about James’ murder they uncover the truth about themselves. As the story unravels Nikki is also looking for the truth about what happened to her father who was murdered in the Bayou years before. Will Hunter and Nikki find the answers they are looking for, and at what cost?

I enjoyed this book from the first page. It was like a tour of hurricane ravaged New Orleans and a murder mystery or two rolled up into one. Lies and secrets abound and right up until the nail biting finish you are rooting for the “good guys” to win. I can’t wait for book 2 in the Secrets of the South Mysteries series.
