Colleen Hall talks about A Wounded Heart
Today I welcome Colleen Hall to my blog where we talk about her latest book, A Wounded Heart.
Welcome, Colleen!
Q: What was the hardest scene to write in the book?
Colleen: The hardest scene for me to write was the fight scene between Shane and his Cheyenne half brother, Wild Wind. I felt a little out of my element when I wrote this scene since I’m not an expert on men’s fights, especially fights in the Plains Indian culture. I wanted this scene to be tense, realistic, and captivating, yet I didn’t want to bore my women readers. Louis L’Amour’s Westerns were a great inspiration and help to me, since many of his novels touch on the culture clash between whites and Indians. Each of his books has at least one fight scene, and studying his fights gave me insight into the fight between the brothers.
Q: Tell me about your main characters.
Colleen: Clint and Coral Logan, the main characters in HER TRAITOR’S HEART, play a part in my sequel, but Della Hughes and Shane Hunter take center stage in WOUNDED HEART. Della is Clint Logan’s orphaned niece, and she accompanies her uncle and his family West when he trails a herd of horses to his ranch in the Colorado Territory in order to sell remounts to the western Army. Della is tired of her sheltered and restricted life in Boston’s Beacon Hill society. She longs for freedom, which she finds on the trek West. Shane Hunter, the army scout whom her uncle has hired to ramrod their wagon train, doubts Della’s ability to adapt to the hardships and dangers of the trail. He advises her to return to Boston. Della is determined to prove him wrong. Their personal conflict sets them at odds with each other despite the attraction simmering between them. And a secret from Shane’s past makes him feel he’s not worthy of Della’s love. Della must convince Shane that she’s strong enough to meet the challenges of the West and that their love can overcome the past.
Q: What are you working on now?
Colleen: Right now I’m working on the third book in my series, which features Shane’s Cheyenne half brother. Wild Wind is introduced in WOUNDED HEART, and I tell his story in WARRIOR’S HEART.
I wish you all the best with your third book!
ABOUT THE BOOK
Della Hughes longs for adventure and for freedom from the strictness and austerity of 1870s Boston society. When her uncle and guardian, General Clint Logan, uses his fortune to purchase property in Colorado and set up a horse ranch selling remounts to the western army, Della decides she must accompany him and his family to the West. Along the journey, Della encounters more adventure than she bargained for.
Rustlers, Indians, and rattlesnakes add danger to the trek. A persistent cavalry captain who believes Della would make him the perfect wife and a Cheyenne chieftain’s son who tells her she’s brought sunshine to his heart complicate her life. And the handsome army scout who ramrods their wagon train guards a secret from his past that makes him believe he’s not worthy of loving Della. She must meet the challenges of the West and convince the man of her heart that love is worth risking everything to gain.
