Anne Mateer
Anne Mateer is a lifelong reader and writer. Her love of history began at an early age, too. Anne holds a degree in history from Southern Methodist University and is the author of four published historical novels as well as a contemporary short story in Guideposts 2014 A Cup of Christmas Cheer. Her novel At Every Turn was a 2013 Carol Award finalist. Anne and Jeff have been married almost 28 years. They love touring historic sites and homes as well as visiting their three young adult children who currently reside in three different states.
Q: When you are writing, what treat do you like to keep you going?
Anne: Coffee and Chocolate, although sometimes I need a salty sweet snack like pretzels and nutella or kettle corn!
Q: Tell me about why / how you chose the genre you write in and what about it appeals to you?
Anne: I have always loved history, but what I love about it most is imagining how real people lived through the events (big and small) that we now read about. Because of that, historical fiction was a natural fit for me. I love to learn, to research, and then to people that world with imaginary characters that must navigate the issues arising out of their time and place in history.
Q: If you were to pick one character out of your books that could materialize and become a real live person, a friend, who would it be and why.
Anne: I think I would have to say Irene from Wings of a Dream, my first book. She was a godly and gracious older woman who befriended the main character, Rebekah, and helped her through some difficult moments, both physically and emotionally. She was not only a good friend, but she had the life experience Rebekah lacked. Irene is who I aspire to be in this season of being a mother of grown children.
Q: What do you do to get into “the zone” when you are writing?
Anne: I usually listen to wordless music, sometimes classical but often movie scores. They have a storytelling aspect that inspires me. And I prefer to be in my “comfy” chair in my office, too.
Q: Please give me one fun fact about yourself that readers may not know.
Anne: My college life was different than most. I attended 3 different colleges in 2 different states and still managed to graduate in 4 years—even after getting married between my sophomore and junior years!

My husband and I retired in the beginning of summer 2009 and moved 10-1/2 hours away to be in the middle of our children in three states in a long day’s drive in any given direction. It has been the best blessing!! We are exactly where the Lord wants us.
Historical fiction is my very favorite genre. I appreciate the research the authors do to place their characters within the happenings/events of the time period. So much more than we might have learned in school.
And… A Home for My Heart, in addition to the top two stories posted above! I absolutely loved this story, too. This first story being offered is the only one I haven’t had the opportunity to read. Love your characters and the lessons to be learned. So good.
Thank you for this interview. Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House
