Q: Is Finding Margo a standalone or the first in a series/trilogy? What was the biggest challenge in writing Margo and Brock’s story?
Jen: This is the first book in a three-book series.
The biggest challenge was probably the idea that this was a book that had been abandoned to a flash drive for years. When my agent asked me if I still had that quirky contemporary stashed somewhere, I was fortunate to find the flash drive, but I have to admit, I’d forgotten most of the story. Because I’ve learned a lot about the writing craft since I wrote this particular book, I ended up having to rewrite the entire thing, keeping the premise of the story, but not much else.
Q: When you began writing Finding Margo, did you have the ending in sight? Or did that happen along the way?
Jen: This is a great question because…the ending of the edition that had been lying about in a flash drive was completely different from the ending of the story that made it to print. As I read through the book again, the mystery changed in my mind, becoming more complete if you will, so while I originally knew exactly how the story was going to end when I wrote the first version, the final ending changed along the way.
Q:You have once again added your signature touches (animals) tell us more about that cute duck, Gabby and how that scene came about.
Jen: The duck was one of the first ideas that formed when I was thinking about this book. I needed a reason for Margo to stop in a small town in Ohio and what better reason could there have been except for a duck to jump into the scene? Because Margo doesn’t care for animals, Gabby turned into the perfect pet for her because she was relatively harmless, after they got through that initial misunderstanding between them, and she’s completely adorable.
Q: What is next for you? What can readers expect?
Jen: Beginning in January, 2017, I have a prequel historical novella releasing, At Your Request. This novella will be available to download for free, and it introduces readers to my next series“Apart from the Crowd. Here’s a link if anyone would care to pre-order it.
Apart from the Crowd is a wallflower series centered around four wallflowers who may just find ways to get firmly pushed from their walls and into adventures they never dreamed they’d experience. The first full-length novel for that series, Behind the Scenes, releases in April 2017, followed by Out of the Ordinary, which will release in November 2017. I don’t have a solid date for the next contemporary, so stayed tuned.
