Thoughtful Thursday with Pepper Basham

Yes, it is the first Thursday of Spring! Whoo hoo! I am looking forward to some green and some sunshine! Who is with me? Today I have a lovely guest with me who is always a ray of sunshine to me! Pepper Basham is here as my guest today, she is an author and a mom, and so much more!

As always, the question I ask my guests is:

What has been dominating your thoughts lately?

Take it away Pepper:

Oh, Melony, what a loaded question!! I’m afraid there has been an entire cacophony of things dominating my thoughts lately. From big things like deeply wounded relationships and financial strain, to little things like finishing a 4th grade science fair project and the constant disappointment in how the scales reflect my poor eating habits.

Life has been particularly tough lately, which can really capture my thoughts in a bad way.

Now, I’m not saying it’s wrong to think about these things. Of course, not! But when those thoughts spin from my head to my heart, and cause anxiety, then I’m stepping into a realm God as called me to give over to Him. Instead of casting my cares on him, I’m holding on to them tightly…and I’m poorly equipped for the task.

It’s in those moments when my heart is racing, my mind is spinning, and my emotions stay on edge, that I realize something I SHOULD already know:

My mind has been so consumed with worry about these many things I cannot control instead of trusting in the One who can control all these many things.

I am grateful God is very clear on this point in the Bible. Tons of Scriptures speak to our worry weary hearts (otherwise known as ‘fear’) and call us to remember whose we are and how very much we are loved.

So, what do we tell our fearful, anxious hearts?

Isaiah 35:4 – Say to those who have an anxious heart,

“Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God.

He will come and save you.”

Joshua 1:9 –

Have I not commanded you?

Be strong and courageous.

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed,

for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 94:19 –

When the cares of my heart are many,

your consolations cheer my soul.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.

Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Romans 8:37-39

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It’s interesting that I seem to write a lot about characters who struggle with worries and insecurities. I suppose it’s because both are such an endemic part of the human experience and we NEED to have our mind and hearts redirected to the only true answer for our worries. In my upcoming book, Just the Way You Are, my heroine really struggles with knowing she can be loved again- that she’s ‘good’ enough. She has to realize, like we all do, that we are loved unconditionally by the ultimate Prince Charming, just as we are reminded in the Romans verses above.

So, when my mind is consumed with things I cannot control, praise God I trust in someone who is IN control and whose love never fails. It’s amazing how quickly our spinning minds, when FIXED on Jesus, can bring our hearts to peace.

Thank you Pepper!

We invite you to share your thoughts!

Amen! Oh my head tends to spin and my heart lends towards worrying. God is so good to continually draw us back to His perfect peace.

Oh, the spinning mind. Gotta love it. 😉

I love the words and Scriptures you share here, Pepper. My favorite is John 14:27. There’s something soothing and amazing to know that the peace Jesus gives me will not go away. I only have to remember and redirect my thoughts.

I needed to reread those Scripture verses as much as the next person. Life is filled with us realizing our weaknesses and desperate need for a Savior! I’m so glad we have one!! 🙂

What a lovely thoughtful post, Pepper and Melony. I think we all need to be reminded of this often.
